It was April 21, 2003, when Amanda Berry was getting ready for her work day prior to her 17th birthday. After reaching the office, she suddenly decided to take a day off to enjoy her birthday. On the way, Berry was offered a ride home by her friend’s father, Ariel Castro, who was an elementary school bus driver who misguided her by narrating a false story that his daughter was at home and asked her if she wanted to meet her, to which she agreed.

Castro took her to a two-story building on Seymour Avenue, where she was asked to wait for her friend to come, and in the meantime, Ariel started showing his home. He took her to the bedroom upstairs, where Berry saw something strange: a mysterious woman watching television. Her name was Michelle Knight. Amanda came to know that she was also kidnapped by Ariel, and by then, she was well aware that things were not going right. Ariel took Berry to the other bedroom and abused her physically.

On April 24, 2003, Amanda Berry’s missing news made the headlines; she saw her mother and sister on the TV in the basement and promised herself that she would fight.

“You know what? I’m going to make it home to you. As long as you fight, I’m going to fight,” she said after watching her mother and sister fighting to find her.

On the fourth day of her abduction, Castro took her upstairs and locked her to a radiator, which was very painful. She said in an interview that it was tough for her to sleep with that big lock on the back.

After a week, Berry family got a late-night call from her cell phone, and Ariel told them that Berry wanted to live with him and hung up the call. Amanda’s family contacted the FBI, and they started tracking the cell phone’s location, but they failed.

Amanda Berry was kept in a closet-sized room where she was given a bucket to use as a bathroom that smelled horrible. Once a week, Berry was offered chips, crackers, or other food and a weekly shower, but with the condition that Castro would also take a shower with her. Berry used to write a diary in notebooks, tissue papers and on fast food bags thinking that one day some authorities may read it and punish him for what he did.

After a year, Castro went on the street to find his new prey, and on April 2, 2004, Castro’s daughter, Arlene’s friend Gina DeJesus, got kidnapped. Ariel again misguided her by asking for help. He took her to the basement and chained her there. The three girls were not allowed to talk, and occasionally, they were permitted to come out of the rooms and do the dishes.

Christmas 2006

It was Christmas Eve when Amanda gave birth to a girl child, Jocelyn, and Castro allowed Jocelyn the freedom when she was 2 or 3 years old. She was free to go outside in the backyard, to the park or to the Sunday services with her father. Castro became a changed man because of Jocelyn’s love.

May 6, 2013

The escape day, May 6, 2013, was the day when Berry finally took a chance to be free. Like other days, Jocelyne was going downstairs, and she noticed that her father was not there. Then she ran back up and told Berry about that. For the first time in 10 years, Castro left the bedroom’s door unlocked. She tried to come out, but there was an alarm on the front door. When Berry was trying hard to escape, Castor’s neighbour, Charles Ramsey, saw her and asked her to kick hard the bottom of the door panel.

Once Berry was out, she asked Jocelyn to crawl through the door. After that, she ran across the road to call 911 for help. Police arrived at Ariel’s house, rescued both the girls and arrested Ariel Castro. He was sentenced to a lifetime imprisonment for finding guilty of 937 counts of kidnapping, rape, and murder on August 1, 2013. After one month of punishment, Castro died by suicide by hanging himself with a bedsheet.
