About Eminem’s Early Life and Struggles

Eminem’s father left him when he was one year old, and his mother raised Eminem. She kept moving between Michigan and Missouri because she could not get any permanent job; she took up small jobs wherever possible. Due to his mother’s job, they had to transfer frequently, which required Eminem to attend new schools, where he was also called out for bullying, which he also talked about in many of his songs and interviews.

Once, he was bullied very poorly, which he has told in his song ‘Brain Damage.’ He had no friends in childhood but was very close to his uncle Ronnie, the first person to introduce Eminem to rap. When Eminem was 11 years old, he heard the song ‘Careless’ by Ice Tea.

By the time Eminem entered teenage,  his mother had started taking drugs and had married another man. Eminem has a half-brother, Nathan Kane, who is now a DJ, producer, and actor. Eminem’s mother became very abusive towards him because of her drug use.

At 17, he dropped out of school and started going to local freestyle rap battling, thus further polishing his skills; from here, he formed his group “The Dirty Dozen”.

Eminem Rapping Career

In the late ’80s, Eminem started rapping while growing up in the underground Detroit hip-hop circuit. As a troubled teen, he took refuge in hip-hop music and, at 15, joined Bassmint Productions, which later became Soul Intent in 1988. It was also the time when he first started recording some of his rap videos and demo tapes. He honed his skills and gained respect by battling rappers in open mic clubs in his area.

He could handle both his job and rapping simultaneously, so he always arrived for work and was fired from his ninth job. In 1996, he spent all his savings and released an album named “Infinite”. He had spent all his savings on it, yet that song did not go viral; it was another failure for him, and after this, he started taking drugs. And was struggling with a lot of mental problems.

In 1997, Eminem released the Slim Shady EP, introducing his new-iconic and highly controversial “Slim Shady” persona. Those raw, shocking lyrics pushed boundaries and made it an underground regional hit. He eventually went to Dr. Dre, who was blown away by Eminem’s unique talent.

In 1998, Dr. Dre signed Eminem to his Aftermath label, becoming Eminem’s mentor and executive producer. After years of trying, it was a big chance for the man at 25.

1999, The Slim Shady LP marked Eminem’s first major label album. Produced by Dr.Dre, it went on to become hugely successful, thereby launching his professional career. Although a dispute erupted over the album’s casual, satirical nature, The Slim Shady LP was a huge commercial success, selling 18 million copies to critics and fans alike.

He followed this up with back-to-back diamond-selling albums—2000’s introspective The Marshall Mathers LP and 2002’s The Eminem Show—that showed he was one of rap’s most technically proficient lyricists and imaginative storytellers. He was now a global superstar.

His Further Career

The 2000s may have been Eminem’s most successful years, but they were not even close to his happiest ones. These are the 2000s that saw most scandals and tragedies happen in his life – dysfunctional family background, constant drug problems, feuds with other stars, etc.

After releasing the semi-autobiographical movie 8 Mile in 2003, his friend Proof was murdered in 2006. That, along with his prescription pill addiction, sent Eminem into a major backslide of depression and obesity. He had an overdose in 2007 and almost died before getting sober.

After four years, Relapse was released in 2009, “clean, caustic, and pathologically personal”. The subsequent more successful recovery was released in 2010, and The Marshall Mathers LP 2 in 2013.

On the revival in 2017, he took an even more personal and political role; On Kamikaze in 2018 and Music to Be Murdered By in 2020, he reminded fans of his distinctive songcraft. His releases like Curtain Call 2 will be further steps towards sealing his legacy.

He has sold over 220 million records worldwide and is believed to be the best-selling rap artist in history. and Eminem Net worth is $250 Million in 2024.
